Solo Exhibition by Yamily Castillo: “Where I Learned to Stay”

There’s a difference between arriving somewhere and truly staying. In “Where I Learned to Stay,”Miami-based artist Yamily Castillo explores that a quiet but decisive transition—the moment when movement slows, and presence begins.

Born in Cuba and raised in Italy, Castillo’s life has been shaped by constant shifts in geography, culture, and identity. This sense of in-betweenness informs her work at its core. Her paintings move beyond composition, as records of time, memory, and transformation.

A Practice Rooted in Material and Memory

Castillo’s process is grounded in the tactile. Using unconventional materials such as sand and coffee, she builds layered surfaces that carry a literal and emotional weight. These textures are not decorative—they are essential. They speak to erosion, accumulation, and the passage of time.

Each piece reads as geological, as if it has been formed rather than created. The surfaces hold a controlled friction: between fragility and strength, control and surrender, permanence and change. Rather than offering a clear narrative, her work invites interpretation. It asks the viewer to slow down, to observe closely, and to engage instinctively.

The Meaning Behind “Where I Learned to Stay”

This exhibition defines a turning point in Castillo’s personal and artistic journey. After years defined by movement, “Where I Learned to Stay” reflects the decision to remain—to root oneself, not in a place, but within.

“I learned how to move before I ever learned how to stay.”

That statement becomes the emotional anchor of the show.

The works embody a quiet tension: what shifts versus what endures. There is no resolution; only grounding. A pause. A sense that something has finally settled, even if only temporarily.

An Invitation to Experience, Not Just Observe

This work resists quick consumption.

It asks for presence.

The layered surfaces, muted palettes, and raw materials create an environment that feels both intimate and expansive. As you move through the work, there is a gradual shift—from looking at the pieces to feeling them.

Castillo’s work doesn’t explain itself. It doesn’t need to. Instead, it creates space for stillness, reflection, and recognition.
